      A Life in Portraiture

Lilias Torrance Newton was a prominent Canadian painter born in Lachine, Quebec. Her early artistic inspiration is thought to have come from an old sketchbook belonging to her father, Forbes Torrance. After studying at Miss Edgar's and Miss Cramp's School, she attended classes at the Art Association of Montreal, where she won a scholarship in the Life class. Her formal education continued in London and Paris, studying under Alfred Wolmark and Alexandre Jacovleff. During the First World War, she served with the Red Cross in England.

As a founding member of the Beaver Hall Group and the Canadian Group of Painters, Newton established herself as a significant figure in 20th-century Canadian art. She was known for her portraits, completing over 300 during her career. Notably, she was the first Canadian commissioned to paint portraits of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1957. Her work is held in numerous public institutions, including the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.

      Artistic Legacy and Recognition

Newton's technical approach was characterized by a concern for solid structure and a use of strong colour schemes. Her work often sought to suggest the psychology of her subjects. A notable moment in her career occurred in 1933 when her painting Nude in the Studio was removed from an exhibition by the Art Gallery of Toronto because the model wore green, high-heeled shoes. This piece was eventually acquired by the Thomson collection at the AGO.

Throughout her career, Newton achieved significant professional milestones, including:

      • Election as an Associate of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1923.
      • Becoming the third female member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1937.
      • Attaining the status of Academician in 1939 and 1973.
      • Receiving an honorary LL.D. from the University of Toronto.

She continued to paint until 1975, passing away in Cowansville, Quebec.
