ولد ستيفن بون في كنف عائلة فنية عريقة، فهو ابن الفنان الشهير السير مويرهيد بون والكاتبة جيرترود هيلينا دود، وقد ترك هذا الإرث العائلي أثراً عميقاً في تشكيل وجدانه الفني منذ نعومة أظفاره.
تلقى تعليمه في مدرسة بيدالز قبل أن يلتحق بمدرسة سلايد للفنون الجميلة في عام 1922، إلا أنه سرعان ما شعر بنوع من عدم الرضا تجاه المنهج الأكاديمي الصارم في "سلايد"، مما دفعه لمغادرة المدرسة في عام 1924 ليتفرغ لشغفه في مجال رسوم الكتب التوضيحية.
المسيرة المهنية المبكرة والتطور الفني
حقق بون نجاحاً لافتاً في بداياته كمصور ومصمم للحفر على الخشب، حيث أبدع أعمالاً مخصصة لوالدته ولعدد من الكتاب الآخرين، وتوج هذا الإبداع بفوزه بالميدالية الذهبية لفن الحفر على الخشب في المعرض الدولي بباريس عام 1925.
وفي عام 1926، شهدت مسيرته محطة فارقة حين شارك في معرض جماعي مع رودني جوزيف بيرن وروبن غوثري في معرض جوبيل، مما عزز من مكانته الفنية. كما أظهر قدرة فائقة على التنوع عندما رسم جدارية لمحطة مترو بيكاديللي سيركس في عام 1928، موسعاً بذلك آفاقه الإبداعية.
كان لزواجه من الفنانة ماري أدشيد في عام 1929 أثر جوهري على فنه، حيث جابت رحلاتهما الواسعة أنحاء بريطانيا وأوروبا، وكانت هذه الأسفار هي المختبر الحقيقي الذي صقل أسلوبه المميز في رسم المناظر الطبيعية المشرقة، متمكناً من التقاط تفاصيل الطبيعة "في الهواء الطلق" بكل براعة، دون أن تثنيه تقلبات الطقس عن مواصلة إبداعه.
ثلاثينيات القرن العشرين: فن المناظر الطبيعية والمعارض
خلال حقبة الثلاثينيات، برز اسم بون في أروقة أرقى المعارض الفنية، مثل جمعية الفنون الجمعة، ومعرض ليفير، ومعرض ريدفيرن.
وفي عام 1936، قدم مجموعة مذهلة مكونة من 41 لوحة تجسد المقاطعات البريطانية في معرض رايمان بأكسفورد، في استعراض جليّ لإخلاصه في محاولة التقاط جوهر وروح المناظر الطبيعية البريطانية.
ولم تقتصر شهرته على الداخل البريطاني، بل امتدت لتشمل ستوكهولم خلال عامي 1936 و1937، مما ساهم في تعزيز حضوره الفني على الساحة الدولية.
فنان الحرب والمساهمات في الحرب العالمية الثانية
مع اندلاع شرارة الحرب العالمية الثانية، انضم بون كضابط في مؤسسة التمويه بالدفاع المدني، وفي عام 1943، تم تعيينه فناناً براتب كامل من قبل اللجنة الاستشارية لفناني الحرب، ليتخصص في المواضيع المتعلقة بالأدميرالية البحرية.
هذا الدور لم يكن جديداً على عائلته، فقد شغله والده مويرهيد بون سابقاً، لكن ستيفن تسلم هذه الأمانة الفنية بعد رحيل شقيقه غافين.
أعمال بارزة من الحرب العالمية الثانية: أنتج بون لوحات عديدة توثق المنشآت الساحلية والقطع البحرية، بما في ذلك مشاهد رسمها من داخل الغواصات.
لقد كان شاهداً وموثقاً لإنزال نورماندي عام 1944، حيث رسم مشاهد من "كاين" و"كورسيل"، كما سجل أحداث الهجوم على جزيرة فالديرن في هولندا. وفي أواخر عام 1944، سافر إلى النرويج ليوثق غرق السفينة "تيربيتز" ويرصد القواعد البحرية المستولى عليها، وصولاً إلى توثيق المقابر الجماعية لأسرى الحرب.
ما بعد الحرب: المسيرة والإرث
بعد انتهاء الحرب، وجد بون أن أسلوبه الفني قد بدأ يفقد بريقه أمام الصيحات الجديدة، ورغم استمراره في الرسم، إلا أنه واجه صعوبات في عرض أعماله في المعارض.
انتقل بون إلى مجال النقد الفني، حيث كتب لصحيفة "مانشستر غارديان"، وساهم بمقالات ساخرة في "غلاسكو هيرالد". كما خاض تجربة العمل في التلفزيون والإذاعة عبر هيئة الإذاعة البريطانية (BBC)، وتعاون مع زوجته في تأليف كتب الأطفال، بل ونظما معاً دورة لتعليم الرسم الجداري في دارتينجتون.
وفي عام 1957، نال شرف تعيينه مديراً لكلية هورنسي للفنون.
الوفاة: رحل ستيفن بون عن عالمنا بسبب مرض السرطان في 15 سبتمبر 1958، في مستشفى سانت بارثولوميو بلندن.
إن أعمال ستيفن بون تظل سجلاً بصرياً لا يقدر بثمن لبريطانيا في منتصف القرن العشرين، فهي تجمع بين سكون مناظرها الطبيعية وبين الحقائق القاسية والمؤلمة لفترة الحرب.
