The Academy and the Italian Light

Lemgo, 1831. The life of Carl Johann Friedrich Adolf Rötteken begins in Germany, but his eyes are already searching for horizons beyond the local landscape. He moves toward the Düsseldorf Art Academy, a place of rigorous discipline where the air is thick with the scent of oil and turpentine. Here, he sits at the feet of C.F. Lessing and J. Schirmer. These mentors instill in him the technical foundations required to translate the physical world onto canvas.

The early 1860s mark a shift in his trajectory. The German landscape recedes as Italy comes into focus. Rötteken travels south, finding himself immersed in the atmosphere of Northern Italy. He captures the quietude of an Italian village and the specific light that falls upon such settlements. His brush records the textures of these southern scenes, moving from the structured lessons of Düsseldorf to a more direct engagement with the Mediterranean environment.

The Senner Horses and Later Years

Rötteken’s work often returns to the strength and movement of animals within specific locales. One notable piece, Sennlandschaft mit Sennerpferden, created around 1860, captures the essence of the Senne region. The painting reveals a moment of life, though history has physically altered the canvas itself. A water-related accident led to the removal of a portion of the left edge, where a mare and her foal once stood. This loss changed the composition, forcing a new horizon line upon the work.

As time passes, his focus remains on the landscape, even as he moves toward the end of his life in Italy. In 1897, he completes Sommerliche Landschaft in Norditalien, an oil on wood that reflects a mature hand. He dies in 1900, leaving behind a body of work defined by:

      • The technical precision learned from the Düsseldorf school.
      • The atmospheric studies of Italian villages and landscapes.
      • The depiction of regional German subjects, such as the Senne horses.
