      1911 - 1934

      Early Life, Family and Training

Born in Helsinki on 16 October 1911, Ernst Krohn entered a world shaped by the intellectual and professional pursuits of his kin. He was the son of Leopold Edward Krohn, a man who worked as a mining engineer, and he grew up alongside his brother, Eino Krohn, who would eventually find his own path in the study of literature. This familial environment provided a backdrop of academic and technical rigor as the young painter began to find his own voice.

His formal path toward the canvas began in earnest when he entered the Drawing School of the Finnish Art Association. Between 1931 and 1933, he dedicated himself to the discipline of his craft within those school walls. It was during these formative years that the foundations of his technique were laid, moving him from a student of form toward a professional presence in the Finnish art scene. His time in the studio prepared him for the first public appearance of his work in Helsinki in 1933.

      Artistic Style and Movements

His brush sought the essence of the world through landscapes and figure paintings, capturing the quietude of nature and the presence of the human form. He favored the tactile qualities of oil and the soft, dusty texture of pastel to bring these subjects to life. His hand moved with an expressionist spirit, following the stylistic path laid down by the November Group. This approach allowed him to move beyond mere imitation, seeking instead a more direct and emotional connection to his subjects.

This creative drive led him to become a founding member of the October Group, a circle of modernists who sought to redefine the artistic landscape. He was a man of significant influence among his peers, eventually being chosen to serve as the chairman of the group. It was a position of leadership that he would never fully inhabit in a public capacity, for he passed away before the group's inaugural exhibition could open its doors. His absence was so deeply felt that the first showing became a memorial exhibition dedicated to his memory.
