      1475 - 1549

      A Life in Friuli

Born in Venice in 1475, Gaspare Negro moved toward a life defined by the stone and color of the Friuli region. By 1503, he was established in Udine, where he married Maddalena, the daughter of the painter and sculptor Floreano "delle Cantinelle." This connection to a family of makers likely helped shape his dual path as both a painter and an architect. He spent much of his career navigating the spaces between these two disciplines, designing the facade and bell tower of the Santa Maria di Castello church in Udine while simultaneously filling sacred spaces with pigment.

His early years in the Venetian tradition left a clear mark on his hand. He began his career absorbing the visual language of Cima da Conegliano and Giovanni Bellini, focusing on the quiet, structured grace that defined the era. As he moved through the decades, his work began to shift, moving away from those early influences toward a more robust and dynamic approach.

      The Evolution of Style

As the years passed, Negro’s work grew more complex. He did not remain static in his methods, instead adapting to the changing currents of the Italian Renaissance. By the time he worked on the frescoes in Castions di Strada in 1534, he had clearly integrated the lessons of Pordenone into his compositions. This transition from the serene qualities of his youth to a more forceful style is visible across his various commissions:

      • The 1513 oil on canvas in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, depicting the Virgin Holding the Dead Christ with several saints.
      • The fresco cycles in the chapel of the Madonna del Santuario della Beata Vergine delle Grazie in Udine around 1518.
      • The ceiling compartments for the church of San Giovanni in Brolo in Gemona del Friuli.
      • The fresco cycle of the church of Sant'Antonio Abate in Venzone around 1530.

A Legacy in Stone and Color

Negro’s presence in the history of the region is felt in the very architecture of the churches he helped shape. His ability to move from the delicate application of oil on canvas to the large-scale demands of fresco and the structural requirements of a bell tower shows a versatile mind. He left behind a body of work that traces the movement of art from the early Renaissance into a more dramatic, localized style. He died around 1549 in Udine, leaving a record of a man who helped define the visual landscape of Friuli.
