      A Pioneer of Modernism

Born in Toronto, Canada, Henrietta Shore was a pioneer of modernism who spent much of her life in the United States, particularly in California. Her early artistic journey began at the age of fifteen when she studied under the Canadian Impressionist Laura Muntz Lyall. During her formative years, her works often focused on genre scenes. As she traveled between Toronto, Europe, and New York, her style evolved under the influence of the Ash Can School aesthetic. This period saw her developing a reputation as a promising painter, exhibiting in Paris, London, and Liverpool.

In 1913, Shore moved to Southern California, becoming part of an influential group of early West Coast modernists. She was a founding member of The Los Angeles Modern Art Society and later participated in the California Progressive Group. Her work during this era was noted for its technical skill and psychological depth, including pieces such as Mother and Child.

      Evolution and Later Years

Shore's artistic expression underwent a radical transformation in New York, shifting from painterly scenes of everyday life toward colorful, close-up abstractions. This period was marked by her exhibitions alongside other modernists and a desire to express metaphysical themes. After returning to Los Angeles, she became close friends with photographer Edward Weston, whose admiration for her work was profound. Her travels to Mexico also introduced her to lithography, a medium she continued to utilize.

In her later years, Shore resided in Carmel-by-the-Sea. During the Depression, she received government commissions to paint murals for the Treasury Department, including works for the Santa Cruz Post Office and the Monterey Post Office. Her final prominent works included:

      • Fishing Industry
      • Limestone Quarry Industry
      • Artichoke industry
      • Brussel Sprouts Industry
      • Artichoke Pickers
      • Monterey Bay 1880-1910
