A Life in Portraiture and Photography

Theodor Sockl was an Austrian painter and photographer born in Vienna. His artistic journey began at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he initially studied sculpture before his interests shifted toward painting. His early works include a portrait of his brother Hermann Karl Sockl and an altar piece for the church of the Piarists Maria Treu in Josefstadt, Vienna.

Around 1846, Sockl lived in Transylvania, where he taught painting in Hermannstadt. During this time, he painted a portrait of his future wife, Clara Adelheid Soterius von Sachsenheim, which is considered representative of the Biedermeier period in Transylvania. His professional repertoire included various commissions, such as:

      • Two door panels of Asklepois and Hygiea
      • A portrait of Kaiser Franz Joseph
      • A portrait of Michael Fr. Herbert
      • A portrait of an unknown businessman from Hermannstadt

      The Wandering Artist

Following the 1848 Revolution, the economic environment forced Sockl into an unsettled wandering lifestyle. In 1853, he purchased photographic equipment in Bucharest to earn a living through this developing medium. He eventually moved his photographic studio to Hermannstadt, and later traveled throughout the country with his family to find work.

In 1857, the family moved from Orşova to Vienna. While living in Fünfhaus, they established a photographic studio. Sockl’s later works included fourteen oil paintings for the cloister at the Ursuline Convent. After the death of his wife, Clara, in 1861, Theodor passed away a few months later. His remaining paintings and studies were eventually sold by his brother, Moritz, to a Viennese junk dealer.
