Smallholders Playing Cards

The Baroque art movement, which emerged during the 17th century, was a significant period in the history of art. It was characterized by its dramatic and emotional style, rich colors, intense light and dark shadows, and a focus on evoking emotion and passion. One notable artist who contributed to this movement is Adriaen Brouwer, a Flemish painter known for his vivid depictions of everyday life.

The Artist and His Style

Adriaen Brouwer was born in Oudenaarde, Flanders, around 1605. He is renowned for his innovative genre paintings, which often featured peasants, soldiers, and other 'lower class' individuals engaged in various activities such as drinking, smoking, or playing cards. His work had a significant influence on the next generation of Flemish and Dutch genre painters.
