Table By A Window

Introduction to the Painting and the Artist

Table by a Window is a 1917 cubist still life painting by French artist Jean Dominique Antony Metzinger. Born in Nantes, France, in 1883, Metzinger was a major 20th-century French painter, theorist, writer, critic, and poet. He is best known for his contributions to Cubism, co-authoring the first theoretical work on the subject with Albert Gleizes in 1912, entitled Du "Cubisme".

Background of Table by a Window

Created during World War I, Table by a Window reflects Metzinger's interest in representing objects as remembered from successive and subjective experiences within the context of both space and time. This is evident in the painting's complex composition, which features various objects on a table next to a window, depicted from multiple perspectives and viewpoints.

Analysis of Table by a Window

The painting showcases Metzinger's mastery of Cubism, with its geometric shapes, interlocking planes, and overlapping forms. The still life elements on the table are fragmented and reassembled in an abstract manner, creating a sense of depth and spatial tension. The window serves as a framing device, providing a glimpse of the outside world and adding to the painting's overall complexity.
