Skutečný průlom však přišel až s jeho zapojením do skupiny Rhondda Group – kolektivu umělců, kteří se věnovali vykreslování reality průmyslového Walesu.

Skupina Rhondda, kterou tvořili umělci jako Gwyneth Roberts a David Davies, se nesnažila o pouhou topografickou reprodukci krajiny. Jejím cílem bylo něco hlubšího: vyjádření pocitů, zachycení nejen toho, co bylo vidět, ale i toho, jak to vnímali. Zoboleovy malby tento etos ztělesňují dokonale. Jeho krajiny nejsou jen prostým zobrazením dolů a odvalů; jsou prosyceny hmatatelným pocitem melancholie, odolnosti a neochvějného ducha lidí z údolí Rhondda.

Zoboleho specifický styl – charakteristický odvážnými tahy štětcem, životnou paletou barev a téměř halucinogenním nádechem – čerpal silně z vlivů expresionismu. Umělci jako Edvard Munch či Franz Marc sloužili jako vzory pro jeho způsob, jakým vyjadřoval emoce prostřednictvím vizuálních obrazů. Místo precizních detailů upřednostňoval zachycení podstaty scény, kde hlavní roli hrály atmosféra a emocionální dopad.

Mezi jeho nejslavnější díla patří série obrazů zachycujících průmyslovou krajinu údolí Rhondda – zejména oblast Ystrad – která jsou souhrnně známá jako „Ystradské malby“. Tato plátna zachycují syrovou krásu svahů pokrytých uhelným prachem, tyčícící se komíny vydechující kouř do nebe a tváře horníků vytesané roky těžké práce. Nejsou to oslavné portréty; spíše vyjadřují dojmovou vědomost úpadku a ztráty.
