Stephen Bone byl synem slavného umělce sirra Muirheada Bonea a spisovatelky Gertrude Heleny Dodd. Toto rodinné umělecké zázemí hluboce ovlivnilo jeho raný rozvoj.
Vzdělání získal na škole Bedales, než se v roce 1922 zapsal na Slade School of Fine Art.

Raná kariéra a umělecký rozvoj

30. léta: Krajinářské malování a výstavy
Během 30. let Bone široce vystavoval v prestižních galeriích, mezi nimiž patří Fine Art Society, Lefevre Gallery a Redfern Gallery.
V roce 1936 představil v galerii Ryman v Oxfordu sérii 41 obrazů zobrazujících britské hrabství, čímž demonstroval své odhodlání zachytit samotnou podstatu britské krajiny.
Vystavoval také ve Stockholmu v letech 1936 a 1937, čímž rozšířil svou mezinárodní působnost.
Válečný umělec a přínos během 2. světové války
S vypuknutím druhé světové války se Bone zapsal jako důstojník v Ústavu pro civilní obrannou maskování.
V roce 1943 byl jmenován plně platným umělcem Výborovou radou pro válečné umělce (War Artists' Advisory Committee) se specializací na témata týkající se Admiralty (Vojenského ministerstva námořnictví). Tato role byla dříve zastávána jeho otcem, Muirheadem Boneem, ale Stephen ji převzal po smrti jejich syna Gavina.
Významná díla z období 2. světové války: Vytvořil četné malby zobrazující pobřežní instalace a námořní plavidla, včetně scén malovaných na palubách ponorek.
Bone byl svědkem a dokumentoval invazi do Normandie v roce 1944, přičemž maloval scény v Caen a Courseulles. Zdokumentoval také útok na ostrov Walcheren v Nizozemsku.
Na konci roku 1944 cestoval do Norska, kde dokumentoval vrak lodi Tirpitz a zaznamenával obsazené námořní základny i hromadné hrobky válečných vězňů.
Poválečná kariéra a odkaz
Po válce zjistil Bone, že jeho styl je již trochu zastaralý. Přestože v malování pokračoval, čelil obtížím při vystavování své tvorby.
Přechází k umělecké kritice, psal pro noviny Manchester Guardian a přispíval humornými texty do Glasgow Herald.
Bone pracoval také v televizi a rádiu pro BBC a spolu s manželkou se věnoval tvorbě dětských knih. Společně organizovali kurz malování stěnných malbas v Dartingtonu.
V roce 1957 byl jmenován ředitelem Hornsey College of Art.
Smrt: Stephen Bone zemřel na rakovinu 15. září 1958 v nemocnici St. Bartholomew's v Londýně.
