      Early Life, Family and Training

Alfred Poell entered the world on March 27, 1867, in Oberndorf bei Salzburg. He was born into a family where the pursuit of science and healing was a matter of tradition, as his father, Franz Poell, served as the Landessanitätsinspektor. This lineage of medical service likely shaped the early path of the young man, leading him toward the rigorous study of medicine at the University of Innsbruck. He moved through his academic years with a focused mind, eventually earning his doctorate in medicine.

Yet, a different calling pulled at his spirit, one that could not be silenced by medical texts. During the period of 1888/89, Alfred Poell sought to refine a different kind of vision by traveling to the Munich Academy for Art. It was there that he spent a year under the guidance of Wilhelm Velten, a man known for his skill in capturing the likeness of horses and soldiers. This instruction provided the foundation for a dual existence, where the precision of a physician met the observant eye of a painter.

His training in Munich allowed him to develop a sense of form and color that would define his later years. While his medical career would eventually lead him to a practice in Linz, the lessons learned in the studios of Munich remained a permanent part of his character. He was a man of two worlds, balancing the clinical duties of a gynecologist with the creative impulses of a student of the Munich Circle.

Life and Career in Linz and Vienna

After completing his medical studies, Poell established himself in Linz, where he began practicing as a gynecologist in 1899. This professional life in Upper Austria ran alongside his growing presence in the local art scene. He became an active member of the Upper-Austrian Art Association, finding a community of like-minded creators in the region. His influence within these circles grew steadily as the years passed.

The year 1913 marked a significant turning point in his social and professional standing. During this time, he joined the Vienna Secession, a move that brought his work to a wider audience. That same year, he took on a leadership role as a co-founder and chairman of the artist group Der Ring. His commitment to the artistic community in Linz remained strong as well; by 1921, he had joined the MAERZ artist association, further cementing his place in the cultural fabric of the city.

      Artistic Style and Motifs

Poell possessed a keen eye for the natural world, a trait that allowed him to translate the vastness of the landscape into works of decorative effect. He favored large-scale compositions that captured the essence of the terrain through powerful colors and a precise observation of nature. His brush often sought out the quiet drama of the high mountains, particularly where they met the stillness of alpine lakes. These waterscapes and snowscapes became the primary language of his creative life, reflecting a deep connection to the rugged topography of his surroundings.

While his early and middle years were dedicated to these expansive vistas, his artistic interests shifted as he aged. In his later years, he turned his attention inward, moving away from the grand scale of the mountains to explore the intimate arrangements of still-lives. This transition marked a change in his focus, moving from the sweeping movements of the outdoors to the quiet, controlled details of objects. Even in his landscape work, such as his depiction of a sunny winter path, there was a sense of light and atmosphere that defined his approach to the canvas.

      Awards and Later Years

As the years passed, the recognition of his talent grew alongside his dual life as a physician and a painter. His contributions to the visual arts were honored by the state on several occasions, beginning with the Silberne Staatsmedaille in 1908. This distinction was followed closely by another Silberne Staatsmedaille in 1909, marking a period of increasing prestige for his work. These honors reflected a career that successfully balanced the precision of medical science with the expressive needs of a painter.

The later years of his life saw a shift in his creative focus, as he turned his attention toward the quiet arrangement of still lifes. This period of his life was marked by a significant achievement in 1925, when he was awarded the Große Staatspreis. This high honor arrived as he continued to be a presence in the artistic circles of Linz and Vienna. He remained active in his pursuits until his death on September 8, 1929, in Gmunden.
