A Life of Words and Melody

Alphonse Olterdissen was a man of many talents, though his legacy is most deeply felt through the sounds and stories of Maastricht. Born in Maastricht to a German father and a mother from Zeeland, he grew up in a world where the local dialect shaped his early social life. While he initially sought to develop his skills in painting, his true impact on his home city came through his work as a writer, poet, and composer.

In 1883, he moved to Amsterdam to attend the Rijksschool voor de Kunstnijverheid. This period of study was intended to refine his artistic abilities in the visual arts. After completing his education, he returned to Maastricht and attempted to establish a private art school. This venture did not find the success he had hoped for, leading him to shift his focus toward other creative pursuits and even toward promoting tourism within his native city.

      The Voice of a City

Financial difficulties often shadowed his life, as a lack of business skill led to significant debts. To find a way forward, he turned his intellect toward the stage, writing plays and operettas. While these early efforts did not immediately bring him fame, his fortunes changed in 1907 with the production of De kaptein vaan Köpenick, a play inspired by the story of Wilhelm Voigt. He followed this success in 1910 with the comical opera Trijn de Begijn.

It is through this particular opera that Olterdissen achieved a lasting connection to the people of Maastricht. The final stanza of Trijn de Begijn carries such local significance that it was officially adopted as the city's anthem in 2002. Though his brother Guus composed the musical theme for the piece, the words written by Alphonse remain a part of the city's identity. His work remains a quiet, enduring presence in the culture of the region he loved.
