      André Lèbre: příběh malíře

The Life and Art of André Lèbre

Born in Toulouse, France, André Lèbre was a painter who spent his entire life within the confines of his home city. His early years were marked by a struggle for means, as his parents were not wealthy. During this time, he was occupied with painting arabesques and foliage under floors, a task that served to stifle his burgeoning talent rather than nurture it. Despite these early hardships, he dedicated himself to the study of art, practicing his craft through constant sketching and the composition of various historical subjects. His talent was eventually recognized by connoisseurs, whose praise encouraged his continued devotion to his art.

Lèbre's technical development was aided by the guidance of François Colombe du Lys and the opening of a workshop by Antoine Durand. He was known for his ability to capture the essence of figures, particularly women, adolescents, and children, though some noted a tendency toward overly red complexions. His brushwork was described as soft and light, possessing a noble character. Beyond the canvas, he found leisure in music, specifically practicing the theorbo.

      Notable Works and Legacy

Throughout his career, Lèbre held significant positions, including serving as the painter for the Toulouse City Hall from 1691 until his departure due to illness in 1694. His oeuvre includes several religious and portrait works, some of which are preserved in various collections:

While many of his sketches and drawings were lost to an accidental fire during his final illness, his surviving works remain a testament to his skill in capturing graceful forms and religious devotion.
