      A Life of Quiet Observation

Born in Kolding on 8 December 1814, Andreas Herman Hunæus lived a life shaped by profound silence. Having been deaf since the age of two, his world was one of visual depth rather than sound. His early years were spent at the Royal Deafstumm Institute, where he first learned the craft of tailoring. It was not long before his father, a man who had transitioned from a trader to a lieutenant and eventually a captain, recognized a different kind of talent emerging in his son. Seeing the boy's natural facility for drawing, his father encouraged him to pursue painting instead of the needle.

This shift in direction led Hunæus to visit the Academy of Fine Arts starting in 1831. He became a dedicated student at the Model School, working steadily toward a professional career. In 1841, his efforts were recognized with a minor silver medal. While he did not seek the grand stage of history painting, he found his footing as a portrait painter, capturing the likenesses of those around him with a steady hand.

      The Art of the Portrait

Hunæus built a reputation through his ability to render the people of his time. His work often focused on the individual, bringing a sense of presence to his subjects. Some of his notable works include:

      • Selvportræt - KMS4185: A reflection of the artist himself.
      • Portræt af konferensråd, overpræsident Michael Lange: A study of a prominent figure.
      • Princess Dagmar of Denmark with her dog: A delicate depiction of royalty.

Beyond portraits, he occasionally turned his attention to the life of Copenhagen. His painting Promenading on the Ramparts of Copenhagen on the Evening of a Public Holiday in Spring (1862) offers a glimpse into the city's social rhythms. Another piece, Violet, Great Bededag Evening, caused a stir among the public during his lifetime. Though he was a respected figure at the Academy, certain institutional rules prevented him from being elected as a formal member in 1857.

      A Final Chapter

The personal life of Andreas Herman Hunæus was deeply intertwined with his emotional well-being. In 1847, he married Thora Johanne Cathrine Garbrecht, the daughter of grosser J.G.F. Garbrecht. Their bond was central to his existence. However, tragedy struck in early 1866 when Thora passed away. The loss was so heavy that Hunæus began to fade physically and emotionally. He died in Copenhagen on 15 May 1866, following his wife into the grave only months after her departure.
