Born in Rome, Italy, Augusto Corelli was a painter who received his formal training at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome, graduating at the age of eighteen. During his formative years, he studied under the Neapolitan painter Achille Guerra and attended the Accademia di Giggi in Via Margutta, a center for studying the human figure that attracted many renowned artists. Although he spent a brief period in Paris, he found the environment did not suit his artistic vision, as he was primarily drawn to landscapes and the rural mountain world.
Corelli's travels through Lazio and Abruzzo led him to the village of Anticoli Corrado, a place perched on a promontory that captivated him. He established an art studio there, becoming one of the first artists to settle in the area and helping to foster an artistic colony. His work in this region often utilized the local inhabitants as models. He was highly regarded for his watercolors and received numerous international honors, including gold medals from exhibitions in Berlin, Chicago, Paris, and Buenos Aires.
Throughout his career, Corelli held several prestigious positions, serving as an academic professor at the Reale Insigne Accadiemia di San Luca and as a counselor for the Società degli Acquerellisti. His influence extended across Europe, earning him honorary memberships in various associations in Vienna and Rome, as well as a correspondence role with the Secessionists of Munich. His family was deeply connected to the arts; his son Filiberto became a painter, and his son Corrado became a sculptor.
