      A Life Shaped by Resilience

Bohumír Matal’s path was marked by the heavy realities of the mid-20th century. Born in Brno, Czech Republic, his early years were defined by the rigorous training he received at the School of Arts and Crafts. However, his education was interrupted by the shadows of war. In 1941, his commitment to antifascist activity led to his arrest and subsequent transfer to the Lohbruck labor camp in Germany. Life in the chain factory was a harsh existence, yet even when he was stripped of his ability to paint, he found a way to communicate. He spent his time in the camp writing letters to his family, using black and white pencil to create illustrations that accompanied his words. These drawings became a vital link to his humanity during a period of profound hardship.

After returning to Brno in 1945, his health required a period of recovery before he could fully return to his brushes. His early work reflected the changing landscape of a post-war world, focusing on the movement of airships, the quiet of ports, and the melancholy of streets in the rain. As he matured, his gaze turned toward the structures of modern life, finding meaning in the grit of cement plants and the rhythmic activity of paper mills.

      Artistic Evolution and Movements

Matal’s career was characterized by a constant search for new ways to interpret the human condition and the industrial environment. He was a central figure in several important artistic circles that sought to define the spirit of their era.

      • Co-founder of Group Brno 57
      • Contributor to scene design

During the 1950s, his work took on a more personal focus, particularly through his portraits and his notable series of cyclists. As the decades progressed, his style underwent a significant shift. By the 1960s, he began to experiment with subtraction and more abstract methods, moving away from the literal depictions of his earlier years. This period of experimentation showed a man willing to strip away the unnecessary to find a deeper essence in his subjects.

      The Quiet Years in Prudká

In 1968, Matal chose a different pace of life, leaving the city of Brno to settle in Prudká at Doubravník. He found a sense of purpose in a renovated mill, which he transformed into his personal studio. This space allowed him to continue his work away from the immediate pressures of urban life. He remained in this setting until his death in 1988, following a long illness. His legacy remains tied to the way he captured the intersection of human life and the industrial world, from the heavy machinery of factories to the solitary movement of a cyclist on a road.
