Born in 1870 in Västra Vingåker Parish, Södermanland, Emil Österman grew up in a house where the scent of dye likely lingered, given his father's work as a dye master. He shared his early years with a twin brother, Bernhard, who also found his way to the brush. The path toward the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts began around 1890, a period of formal study that lasted until 1893. During these years, he learned the precision of etching under Axel Tallberg and earned the Royal Medal for a painting depicting the murder of Axel von Fersen.
Between 1894 and 1898, scholarships allowed him to move through the landscapes of Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, and Spain. These travels brought new light into his work. He returned to Stockholm not just as a student, but as an observer of the wider European tradition. By 1900, he had become a member of the Academy, eventually taking on a teaching role there from 1901 to 1908.
His hands were often busy with the faces of others. As a portrait painter, he captured the quiet presence of his subjects, much like his brother did. His work was not confined to the studio; he served as Sweden's official Commissioner at various exhibitions, representing the nation in Munich, Vienna, and Brighton. These roles required a steady eye and a reliable hand.
The Academy remained a central part of his professional life. In 1914, he reached the position of Vice-Professor of Painting. His presence was felt in major exhibition spaces across Europe, from the Venice Biennale to the Baltic Exhibition. Even as his career progressed through different appointments, the focus remained on the technical demands of his craft, whether through oil on canvas or the fine lines of an etching.
The end of his life came in Stockholm in 1927. Though he passed away, the physical traces of his work remain held in several significant places. His paintings can be found in the following locations:
Some of his pieces, like Mother and child from 1910, continue to exist in the public domain. His work remains a part of the historical record of Swedish painting, documented through both his academic contributions and his participation in the international exhibition circuit.
