      The Architecture of Presence

Ernesto Pujol moves through the world with a deliberate, measured pace. Born in Havana, Cuba, his path has been shaped by a pursuit of stillness and a deep engagement with the spaces we inhabit. He describes himself as an urban monk, a title that reflects a life spent navigating the tension between solitude and social connection. His background is a mosaic of disciplines, ranging from humanities and psychology to theological studies at John Vianney Seminary and Western Monastic Studies at Mepkin Abbey. This diverse formation has provided him with a unique lens through which to view the built environment.

His work does not rely on permanent objects but on the ephemeral traces of movement. As a performance artist and social choreographer, Pujol utilizes site-specific performances to reveal the silent layers of architecture and landscape. He employs techniques such as repeated walking, deep listening, and radical inclusion to create what he calls collective, durational performances. These actions are intended to act as psychic portraits, uncovering the invisible histories embedded in historic buildings and ancestral lands.

      A Methodology of Vulnerability

The practice of Pujol is rooted in a profound sense of place. He approaches architecture not merely as stone and mortar, but as a vessel for human experience. By staging works in emblematic structures, he seeks to mine the silences between spaces. His methodology embraces vulnerability, using it as a tool for critical self-knowledge and a way to foster connection within communities under threat. This approach is often characterized by:

      • The use of social choreography to organize collective human movement.
      • A focus on durational performance that requires sustained presence.
      • The practice of deep listening to respond to the nuances of a site.
      • An emphasis on site-specificity to ground art in physical reality.

This commitment to the local and the tangible was evident in his efforts to assist in rebuilding areas of Puerto Rico following the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017. His work often seeks to counteract the modern culture of speed and spectacle by returning to a state of contemplative presence.

      The Written Word and Pedagogy

Beyond the physical performance, Pujol has documented his reflections on social engagement through various publications. He has explored the intersections of art, ecology, and justice, providing critical essays on contemporary culture. His writings include:

      • Walking Art Practice: Reflections on Socially Engaged Paths (2018)
      • Sited Body, Public Visions (2012)
      • The Boys' Garden Club (originally published under the pen name E. D. Pujol)
      • The Dog Walker of Philadelphia (2024)

As an educator, he has shared these insights within academic institutions such as the School of Visual Arts, Parsons, The New School, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. At the Stuart Weitzman School of Design, he co-leads the Art & the Ecology of Justice Seminar, offering a forum for students to examine socially engaged cultural practices. Through both his teaching and his performance, Pujol continues to investigate how we might reclaim balance in an era of rapid change.
