Ferdinand Bauer was an Austrian botanical illustrator born in Feldsberg, Moravia, in the Habsburg monarchy. The youngest son of Lucas Bauer, a court painter to the Prince of Liechtenstein, he was raised under the guidance of the physician and botanist Norbert Boccius. His early training included working in Vienna under Nikolaus von Jacquin, where he studied the Linnean taxonomic system, microscopy, and landscape painting. In 1786, he accompanied John Sibthorp to Greece and Asia Minor, producing sketches that contributed to the work Flora Graeca.
Bauer later served as a botanical draughtsman on Matthew Flinders' expedition to Australia. Working under botanist Robert Brown, he documented various specimens using an innovative colour-coding technique to ensure accuracy in his sketches. His travels included excursions to Norfolk Island, Newcastle, the Blue Mountains, and the south coast of New South Wales. He returned to England with a vast collection of drawings featuring Australian plants and animals.
Following his return to England, Bauer worked on publishing Illustrationes Florae Novae Hollandiae and contributed plates to Flinders' Voyage to Terra Australis. After a failed publishing venture, he returned to Vienna in 1814, where he continued to work for English publications and painted in the Austrian Alps until his death in 1826.
