The Life of Franz Ignaz Oefele

Franz Ignaz Oefele was a German painter, etcher, and miniaturist. Born in Posen, he was raised by an uncle in Landsberg am Lech after his father, a Bavarian watchmaker, passed away before Oefele was one year old. His early artistic training began with lessons from a local painter, followed by studies in Ingolstadt under Melchior Buchner and in Augsburg with Gottfried Bernhard Göz. He later worked for the Bavarian court painter, Balthasar Augustin Albrecht, in Munich.

Oefele's travels took him to Venice, where he studied with Giuseppe Nogari for six years, and subsequently to Rome, where he learned from the English history painter John Parker and the Flemish painter Jan Frans van Bloemen. After eight years in Italy, he returned to Munich. There, he served as the court painter for Maximilian III Joseph, Elector of Bavaria, and was appointed the first Professor of Drawing at what would become the Academy of Fine Arts.

      Artistic Contributions and Legacy

Throughout his career, Oefele focused primarily on painting altarpieces and portraits. His work was recognized through various professional appointments, including membership in the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Some of his most notable portraits were later transformed into copper engravings by Franz Xaver Jungwirth.
