      The Painter of Monterubbiano

In the quiet streets of Monterubbiano, the life of Giovanni Pagani took shape. He was a man of his town, a resident who held public offices and walked the same paths as the people he painted. His hands were trained in the workshop of Pietro Alamanno, where the early lessons of form and color began to settle. There is a certain weight to his history, one tied to the local community and the civic duties he performed, such as his time as a prier for the Torno contrada. He lived through a period of transition, moving between the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, leaving behind a legacy that was carried forward by his son, Vincenzo, and his grandson, Lattanzio.

His work carries the influence of Carlo Crivelli, a presence felt in the way he approached his subjects. He did not work in isolation from his family or his neighbors. His life was woven into the fabric of the Marche region, marked by the simple realities of marriage to Giulia and the raising of his children, Sigismonda and Vincenzo. Even as he painted, he was a man of the law and the town, helping to update the local statutes in his later years.

      A Singular Record

Much of what we know of his hand comes from a single, dated moment. In the spring of 1506, he left a mark on a wooden panel that has traveled far from its origin. This work, a retable, tells a specific story of protection and intervention. It was once housed in the church of Sant’Agostino in Cingoli before it moved through various hands and collections, eventually finding its way to France.

The details of his surviving output include:

      • The Virgin of Succour: A work from 1506, currently held in the Musée du Petit Palais, Avignon.
      • Family Lineage: A tradition of painting passed to his son Vincenzo and grandson Lattanzio.
      • Civic Involvement: Service as a prier and a member of the commission for the patrii statuti.

      The Legacy of the Retable

The painting known as La Vierge du Secours remains the most direct connection to his skill. It depicts a scene of a mother saving a child from a demon, a subject that required a careful hand to balance the tension of the struggle with the grace of the Virgin. This piece has moved from the altars of Cingoli to the collections of the Marquis Campana, and eventually into the care of the Musée du Louvre and the Musée du Petit Palais. It is a quiet survivor of a long history, a piece of wood and pigment that carries the name of a man from Monterubbiano into the modern age.
