      The Prospector's Palette

November 23, 1840, marks the beginning of Harvey Otis Young in Lyndon, Vermont. The son of Wealthy Anne and Otis Jarvis Young, he grows up in a landscape defined by the agriculture of his home state. Life shifts abruptly in 1859. Driven by the promise of gold, Young boards a steamer via the Panama Canal, heading toward the Sierra Nevada mountains. He is no longer just a student of St. Johnsbury Academy; he is a miner in the Salmon River area.

The transition from gold seeker to fine artist happens in stages across the American West. After serving in the Federal Cavalry and being stationed in Walla Walla, Washington, Young settles in San Francisco in 1866. He finds work decorating horse-drawn carriages before opening his own studio in 1867. This period marks a professional pivot. He joins the San Francisco Artists' Union and begins exhibiting works like Vernal Fall. The rugged reality of the frontier begins to merge with formal artistic training.

      European Study and Western Light

Between 1869 and 1879, Young moves between the American frontier and the art centers of Europe. He makes at least six trips abroad. In Paris, he sits in classes at the Academie Julian and studies under Carolus Duran. His training in Munich adds a layer of academic rigor to his technique. These years are spent absorbing the methods of European masters, yet his eyes remain fixed on the American landscape.

In 1873, a sketching expedition takes him through Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. He captures the Sierra Nevada and the rugged terrain of the West. His work from this era includes:

The influence of the Hudson River School and French Barbizon painting settles into his brushwork. He employs an impressionistic method while maintaining the eye of an unswerving realist. His paintings do not shy away from the truth of the terrain.

      The Colorado Years

By 1879, Young finds a permanent footing in Manitou Springs, Colorado. The mining impulse returns, as he spends much of the 1880s pursuing opportunities in the earth, yet his sketches of the landscape continue to appear in press reports. He eventually moves to Colorado Springs, establishing himself as a central figure in the local art community. In 1893, he joins the executive committee of the Artists' Club of Denver, an organization that would later become the Denver Art Museum.

His late career is defined by his presence in the Denver art scene, serving as a juror for exhibitions in 1894 and 1895. His work is noted for its fidelity to nature and its spiritual content. He captures the mountains, the cattle watering by streams, and the specific light of the Rocky Mountains. The life of the artist ends in Colorado Springs on May 13, 1901, following a struggle with congestion of the lungs.
