A Life of Artistic Talent and Eccentricity

Born in the Tokugawa shogunate, Hayashi Jikkō was a painter and artist who demonstrated extraordinary talent from a young age. At the age of twelve, he showed his skill while frequenting the home of Ritsuhara Suiken, even providing instruction to the young Ritsuhara Ansho. His technical ability grew until he moved to Edo, where his talent was recognized by Tani Kachō, who commissioned him to paint gold folding screens as a substitute. Known for his bold and unrestrained compositions, Jikkō excelled in depicting flowers, birds, insects, and animals, earning significant praise for his works such as Jikkō Baika.

Despite his talent, Jikkō's life was marked by financial hardship. He spent time in Edo painting ema for street vendors and lived in poverty before returning to Mito. He was also a skilled seal engraver, and his seal collection was published posthumously. He is remembered for his eccentric nature, including an episode where he refused to paint the eyes of a tiger, claiming that if he did, the creature would escape.
