The Life of Hugh William Williams

Known by the nickname "Grecian Williams," Hugh William Williams was a Scottish landscape painter born in 1773. While his early years remain somewhat of a mystery, he was born at sea during a voyage to the West Indies. He was raised in Edinburgh by his grandmother after losing both parents when he was very young. His early career saw him working as a drawing master and establishing a Drawing Academy in Glasgow. He also ventured into the world of theater, working as a scene painter for productions in Glasgow and London.

Williams was a prolific creator of watercolour landscapes, often capturing the scenery of the Scottish Highlands. His travels eventually took him on an extended tour of Italy and Greece from 1816 to 1818, a journey that profoundly shaped the character of his work and earned him his famous moniker. He was a founding member of the Associated Artists in both London and Edinburgh and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1823.

      Artistic Technique and Legacy

The artist utilized a refined watercolour technique, often beginning with a faint pencil outline rather than ink. His color palette was frequently restricted to red, blue, and yellow, which were overlaid to produce various shades of green. His work was highly sought after, leading to the publication of several suites of etchings and aquatints, including Select Views in Greece. His travels were documented in his published work, Travels in Italy, Greece and the Ionian Islands.

Williams's artistic legacy is preserved in several major institutions, including:

He died in Edinburgh in 1829 and was buried in the Canongate Kirkyard.
