Jack Hamel was a Dutch painter and actor. Born in Kralingen, Netherlands, he received his artistic training from his father, Willem Hamel, and later attended the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague. His professional life was marked by a dual career; he appeared in the Dutch silent film Ontmaskerd in 1915 and performed with various theater companies, including Het Hollandsch Toneel and Hofstad Tooneel. Due to hearing issues, he largely ceased acting around 1928.
During the 1920s, Hamel traveled through Italy, Spain, and France, including Corsica, where he collaborated with the painter Jelle Troelstra. By the 1930s, he was a celebrated artist with solo exhibitions at prominent art dealers and participation in group exhibitions with organizations such as Arti et Amicitiae. In his later years, he lived in Hilversum, where he taught drawing and painting.
Hamel’s diverse oeuvre includes paintings, watercolors, gouaches, and drawings. His subject matter ranged from cityscapes and harbor views to landscapes, still lifes, nudes, figure studies, and portraits. His technique varied from smooth, precise application to visible, expressive brushstrokes. His color palette shifted from dark tones in certain portraits to bright hues in his works from Southern Europe.
In his depictions of Southern Europe, Hamel focused on the structure of irregular houses with small windows, shutters, and balconies, often portraying villages as blocks stacked against hills. In the Netherlands, he was drawn to the vastness of the landscape, dramatic skies, and unique light. His still lifes are noted for their careful rendering of textures, while his nudes emphasized the depiction of skin, often featuring Black models.
