The Life and Career of Jacques Laumosnier

Born in Paris, France, Jacques Laumosnier was a painter who emerged from a family of artisans. His artistic foundation was built through an apprenticeship at the Gobelins factory, where he studied under Charles Le Brun and Adam Frans van der Meulen, and later under Jean-Baptiste Martin. By 1693, he had been received as a master painter and joined the Académie de Saint-Luc. His career was marked by significant patronage, most notably from Marshal René de Froulay, Count of Tessé, for whom he produced nine large paintings depicting major events in the Marshal's life. These works included depictions of the Interview of Louis XIV and Philip IV on Pheasant Island and the Marriage of Louis XIV and Marie-Thérèse of Austria.

      Royal Service and Later Works

From 1718, Laumosnier held the title of painter to the king, collaborating with flower painters Jean-Baptiste Belin father and son in royal residences such as Versailles, Fontainebleau, and Saint-Germain. Following the death of his primary patron in 1725, he transitioned to private commissions for the aristocracy and bourgeoisie. His repertoire included portraits in the style of Hyacinthe Rigaud, such as a presumed portrait of the financier Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy Petit de Saint-Lienne. He also participated in the decoration of the Château d'Ermenonville. In 1735, he served as a professor at the Académie de Saint-Luc, continuing his professional activity until his last known act in 1744.
