      The Geometry of Sight

Jan van den Abbeel was born in Denderbelle and spent his life looking at how light and color interact with the space around them. He was a Belgian constructivist who moved through the world of the Optical Art Movement, seeking a way to make art exist as a physical part of a room rather than a window into another world. He did not care for the messy emotions or the lyrical outbursts found in other styles. Instead, he focused on the way a line or a color could trigger a physical reaction in the eye. His work was about the mechanics of seeing.

In his studio, the focus remained on the relationship between the canvas and the environment. He worked alongside Willy Plompen and Yves De Smet to form the PLUS group. This group sought to create a new way for art to inhabit a living space. They wanted the viewer to experience the work as a rhythmic movement of light and structure. It was a quiet, calculated pursuit of visual truth.

      Structural Rhythms

The work of Jan van den Abbeel is built on a foundation of strict, geometric logic. He used color and structural elements to create optical effects that seem to shift when the viewer moves. There is a certain precision in how he organized his compositions to achieve these movements. He avoided the personal or the sentimental, choosing instead to let the mechanics of vision do the work. His pieces often involve a repetition of forms that guide the eye through a specific, controlled path.

His output includes several notable series and individual studies:

      • Composition
      • Zig B
      • Zig II
      • Zig-reeks n° 2
      • Zig-reeks n° 7

      A Legacy of Precision

By the time he passed away in Ghent, Jan van den Abbeel had established a clear way of working that prioritized the optical environment. His pieces, such as those in the Zig series, show a commitment to the idea that art should be integrated into the space it occupies. He stripped away the unnecessary, leaving only the essential elements of color and structure. This approach allowed his work to function as a part of the architecture of sight, a way to engage with the world through pure, rhythmic movement.
