A Flemish Master of the 16th Century

Jan van Wechelen, also known as Hans van Wechelen, was a Flemish painter and draughtsman active in Antwerp during the middle of the 16th century. His artistic output focused on landscapes, biblical subjects, and genre scenes. He was first recorded in 1557 in the records of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp, where he was noted as the master of an apprentice named Hans de Boeys.

The artist is recognized for his collaborations with Cornelis van Dalem, particularly in works where he provided staffage. In these partnerships, he was known for painting dignified figures that complemented van Dalem's landscapes. His reputation was significant enough that his work was collected by prominent figures such as Rubens, Cornelis van der Geest, and Pieter Stevens.
