John Green was a portrait painter who later transitioned into a career as a judge. Born in the Thirteen Colonies, he eventually migrated to Bermuda. His early life is marked by his presence in Philadelphia during the late 1750s, where he sat for a portrait drawing by Benjamin West. While the exact source of his early training remains unknown, it is possible he learned the art of painting miniatures in Philadelphia. In September 1774, Green traveled to London for further study, renewing his acquaintance with West during his time in England.
Green eventually moved away from painting after his wife inherited a house, which the couple named Verdmont. He turned toward civic life, serving as the collector of customs in 1785 and later as a judge on the Court of Vice-Admiralty in 1786. In this judicial role, he was responsible for the disposition of prizes of war seized by privateers. He also served as a member of the governor's council and was a gentleman farmer at Verdmont.
Fewer than a dozen paintings by Green survive, with most known works dated between approximately 1775 and 1785. His surviving oeuvre includes:
The family portraits were once held by descendants of Samuel Trott before being donated to the Bermudian government; they are currently kept at Verdmont, which is owned by the Bermuda National Trust. Additionally, a drawing by Benjamin West of Green is held by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania.
