John Kinder was a British and New Zealand Anglican clergyman, teacher, artist, and photographer. Born in London, United Kingdom, he studied Mathematics, Classics, and Theology at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a member of the Cambridge Camden Society. After being ordained as a priest in 1848, he served as Master at Alleyne's Grammar School in Uttoxeter before relocating to Auckland, New Zealand, to become the headmaster of the Church of England Grammar School. During the New Zealand Land Wars of the 1860s, he served as a chaplain to the British Forces. Later in life, he became the Master of St John's College in Tamaki and received a Doctor of Divinity from the Archbishop of Canterbury.
While his life was largely dedicated to education and theology, Kinder gained recognition after his death for his work as an artist and photographer. His artistic output focused primarily on landscape and architectural portraits, with a particular emphasis on watercolour paintings. As a photographer, he captured significant historical records, including portraits of Wiremu Tamihana and views of Parnell in the 1860s. A founding member of the Auckland Society of Artists, his works were exhibited by the society in 1871 and 1873. His artistic and photographic legacy is preserved through various archives, including a topographical map of Auckland held in the Hocken Library.
