      Early Life, Family and Training

Born in 1813 within the Vilna Governorate of the Russian Empire, Kazimir Yasevich entered a world of nobility. His lineage provided a foundation of status, yet his true inclinations were revealed early through a profound love for drawing. From his childhood, he sought the guidance of an experienced teacher, a mentor who helped shape the raw talent of the young boy into a disciplined skill. This early devotion to the craft suggested a life dedicated to the visual arts long before he would face the formal scrutiny of the academy.

By the time he reached eighteen, Yasevich had already begun to navigate the professional world of instruction. He was appointed as a drawing teacher, serving both a provincial gymnasium and a city school in Mogilev. This period of teaching allowed him to refine his own understanding of form and line while earning his way through the complexities of a burgeoning career. His talent was not merely a private passion but a practical vocation that demanded both precision and patience.

The year 1833 marked a significant turning point when he was admitted to the entrance exam at the Imperial Academy of Arts. His potential was recognized by the institution, and he was accepted as a full-time student under state support. This period of rigorous study prepared him for the final milestone of his formal education. In 1836, he graduated from the Academy of Arts, earning the title of a free artist and marking the completion of his foundational training.

      Academic Career and Professional Roles

The Academy of Arts recognized his talent early through the merit of his brush. After completing his studies, he was awarded a small silver medal for a portrait of Canon Gintillo, a work painted from life that signaled his growing mastery. His devotion to the craft and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects eventually led to higher honors. In 1859, he was elevated to the rank of Academician, a distinction earned through his portrait of the General-Adjutant Count Osten-Saken and his many years of diligent labor within the artistic community.

Beyond the halls of the Academy, Yasevich shared his knowledge with the next generation. He held positions as a drawing teacher in both the second and third St. Petersburg gymnasiums, guiding students through the fundamentals of form and line. His expertise was sought not only in the classroom but also in the legal and administrative spheres. Around the 1840s, he acted as an appraiser of artworks, working on behalf of the Academy and the judicial department to evaluate pieces often sent to settle debts.

His hands were as skilled at preservation as they were at creation. He spent much of his professional life engaged in the delicate task of restoring old paintings that had been damaged by the passage of time. This work required a patient hand and a deep understanding of the materials used by those who came before him. Through these various roles, he moved between the duties of a teacher, a scholar of value, and a restorer of history.

      Patrons, Workshop and Commissions

The life of Kazimir Yasevich was marked by a profound generosity that often stood in contrast to his own modest means. Despite the heavy burden of supporting a large family, he opened the doors of his own home to the next generation of painters. For thirty years, he allowed his apartment to serve as a space for a painting school, providing a sanctuary for those seeking to master their craft. His devotion to the art extended to the personal mentorship of three visiting students from the Academy, whom he hosted and supported within his own domestic walls.

His skill was sought not only for the creation of new images but for the careful preservation of the old. He was entrusted with the delicate task of restoring paintings within the Grand Tsarskoye Selo Palace and the Hermitage. In the palace of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich the Elder, he applied his hand to the restoration of the painting "The Judgment of Paris." Such high-profile responsibilities were common, as he was frequently called upon to mend works held in the private galleries of esteemed collectors, including Princes D. A. Lobanov-Rostovsky and A. B. Kurakin.

Beyond the secular halls of palaces and private estates, Yasevich dedicated much of his labor to the sacred. He painted icons and religious works for the Kanevsky Monastery and various churches that served the faithful. His brush touched the walls of institutions and sacred spaces in Oranienbaum, Peterhof, Pskov, Smolny, and the Vladimir Cathedral. Through these diverse commissions, from the grandest imperial rooms to the quietest chapels, his presence was felt throughout the spiritual and social landscape of his time.
