      Léon Gard: příběh malíře

The Life and Art of Léon Gard

Léon Gard was a French painter and art critic born in Tulle, Limousin. After his family moved to Morigny, Normandy, and later to the 13th arrondissement of Paris, he began expressing his artistic gifts at an early age. In 1913, at twelve years old, he drew a self-portrait in charcoal. Two years later, he was enrolled in the Académie Ranson after writing to Louis Metman. Throughout his career, Gard worked as a notarial clerk and later as an art restorer, owning a workshop where he also continued his writing.

His painting style involved using pure colour and a technique he called Aura. He often used knife-and-plaster for a vigorous touch to create luminous shadows. His subjects included:

      • Still lifes, such as Red Roses and The Red Géranium
      • Portraits of figures including Sacha Guitry and Jeanne Fusier-Gir
      • Landscapes featuring pond life, trees, and changing seasons
      • Nudes with glowing flesh

      Artistic Writing and Criticism

Beyond his visual work, Gard was a prolific writer. In 1946, he founded the art review Apollo, where he published over two hundred articles over ten years. His writings often explored his conception of art as an imitation of nature and included critiques of abstract art. He also contributed articles to the weekly magazine Panorama and later wrote for L'Amateur d'Art and Rivarol.
