The Quiet Life of a Jesuit Painter Born in Antwerp around 1626, Ignacio Raeth lived a life defined by the boundaries of his religious calling. He was a member of the Society of Jesus, entering the order in 1644 at the age of eighteen. Before his religious life took precedence, he was already a member of the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp, having been admitted in 1641. His hands were trained by Daniel Seghers, another Jesuit brother who
taught him the nuances of his craft. This connection placed him within a specific lineage of painters who used their brushes to serve the spiritual needs of their order. His presence in Spain began when he arrived in the company of Johann Nithard, the confessor to Queen Mariana of Austria.
