      The Scholar of the Academy

Nicolaus Wolff was a figure of singular discipline within the Danish art scene of the late eighteenth century. His path was defined by a rigorous adherence to the formal structures of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. He holds a distinct place in the institution's history as the first student to complete the entire prescribed course of study. This academic devotion was rewarded with four medals, marking him as a talent of significant promise during his formative years.

His early development was shaped by the heavy influence of his mentor, Abildgaard. Under this guidance, Wolff’s work began to absorb the aesthetics of older Italian and French traditions. This synthesis of classical training and personal observation allowed him to navigate the transition from a student of theory to a practitioner of significant technical skill. His early successes were not merely academic; they were the foundation of a career that would eventually take him across borders.

A Life of Commissions and Transitions

The trajectory of Wolff’s professional life was marked by both prestigious patronage and the quiet struggles of a working artist. In 1789, he moved into the service of the statesman C.D. Reventlow, working as a family painter at Pederstrup. This period provided him with the opportunity to tackle complex compositions, including a large group portrait of the Reventlow family. This work captured the minister, his wife, their eight children, and their nurse, requiring a careful hand to manage such a diverse assembly of subjects.

His professional milestones included several notable achievements:

      • The completion of a full academic curriculum at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.
      • The receipt of a scholarship from the Kunstakademiet.
      • The execution of a commissioned altarpiece for a church near Pederstrup.
      • A period of professional activity in Dresden.

Despite these accomplishments, the stability he sought proved elusive. While his altarpiece was sent to Copenhagen, the reception from the Academy was somewhat underwhelming, even if it secured him the scholarship he required. His later years were spent in Dresden, where the expected professional momentum failed to materialize. The struggle to maintain a livelihood in a foreign city took a heavy toll on his well-being.

      The Mythological Lens

Wolff’s brush often turned toward the mythological, seeking to translate classical themes into oil on canvas. One of his most significant works, Amor, der vækkes af Psyche, painted in 1796, exemplifies this interest. For a time, this piece was misattributed to J.G. Wahl, but it has since been identified as a work of Wolff, reflecting the stylistic echoes of his mentor. His interest in the works of C.M. Wieland, specifically the themes of Oberon and Agathon, further illustrates his preoccupation with the dramatic and the legendary.

The end of his life was as quiet and difficult as his final years in Dresden. He struggled with the realities of his existence, and his life came to an end by his own hand in 1813. He remains a figure of historical interest, a man who mastered the strictures of his training only to find the practical world of art a much more difficult landscape to navigate.
