      Early Life, Family and Training

Antwerp, 24 December 1635. Philips Brueghel enters the world through baptism, the second son of Jan Brueghel the Younger and Anna-Maria Janssens. His lineage is a dense network of Flemish artistic talent. His mother is the daughter of the Antwerp history painter Abraham Janssens. Through his father, he is the grandson of Jan Brueghel the Elder, a central figure in the 17th-century Antwerp art scene. The family workshop is a place of constant production, where Philips grows up alongside his brothers, Jan Pieter, Abraham, Ferdinand, and Jan Baptist, all of whom would eventually find success as artists.

Training begins within the walls of the family workshop. Here, the technical foundations of a painter and printmaker are laid through direct instruction. By the guild year 1654-1655, Philips moves from apprentice to a recognized member of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke. He enters the guild as a wijnmeester, the designation for the son of a master. This status marks his formal integration into the professional structure of the city's artistic community.

      Activity in Paris and Antwerp

The family workshop in Antwerp provides the foundation, but the trajectory shifts in 1658. A contract, signed by his father, Jan Brueghel the Younger, sends Philips to Paris for a three-year term. He moves into the household of his uncle, Jan Valdor, the husband of his mother's sister, Catherine Janssens. This period in France marks a departure from the immediate confines of the Antwerp guild, placing him in a different artistic environment for several years.

By 1661, the Parisian chapter concludes. He returns to Antwerp, the city of his birth and training. His presence in the Flemish capital is recorded one final time in 1662. After this, the trail of his activity becomes difficult to trace, as he disappears from the city's records.

      Key Works and Style

Philips Brueghel moves between genres, applying his hand to still lifes, history paintings, and landscapes. His approach to the still life diverges from the patterns established by his brothers. While his siblings largely focused on floral subjects, Philips pursues a more original direction. This is evident in the work titled Pike, Barbel and other Fish in a Bowl, Celery, Radishes, Pumpkins, Melons and a Basket of Fruit by a Stone Wall. Signed PHILVPS BREVGHEL, this composition resides in the McMaster Museum of Art. It presents a departure from the family's typical floral arrangements, opting instead for a diverse collection of textures and organic forms.

The artist's hand also appears in history painting. He is believed to be the painter of the Fall of Phaethon, a work signed P Breughel and held in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. His output remains limited, with very few works known to exist today. He remains a distinct figure within the Brueghel lineage, carving out a specific niche through these varied subject matters.
