A Life Within the Studio Walls

Poleksija Todorović lived during a time when the doors of European art academies remained firmly closed to women. This reality shaped much of her creative path, directing her focus toward the intimate and the personal. Without the formal academic training available to her male contemporaries, she sought knowledge through more direct means. She began her studies under the painter Jovan Deroko and continued her instruction at the school run by Stevan Todorović.

Her artistic world was deeply connected to her marriage and her community. Alongside her husband, she contributed to large-scale church compositions and historical scenes. In many of these works, she appeared not only as a creator but also as a model, helping to bring complex religious and historical narratives to life through her presence in the paintings. This shared practice created a unique domestic and professional bond centered around the brush and the canvas.

      Portraiture and Teaching

Because of the educational limitations placed upon women in the nineteenth century, Poleks and her work often found their expression in portraiture. This medium allowed her to demonstrate her talent through the study of individual character and likeness. Her skill in capturing faces helped her secure a respected position within Serbian cultural life.

Beyond her own studio practice, she dedicated fifteen years to shaping the next generation of women. As a drawing instructor at the Higher Women’s School, she provided technical guidance during a period when women's roles in society were beginning to shift. Her work as an educator was a quiet but steady contribution to the development of female literacy and skill in art.

      Recognition and Legacy

While much of her individual output has remained largely unstudied by historians, her presence in the broader art scene was marked by significant moments of public display. In 1911, she participated in the International Exhibition in Rome, an event that brought her work into contact with a wider audience and contemporary criticism.

Her life remains a study of navigating the boundaries of what was permitted for a woman of her era. Through her portraits, her involvement in church painting, and her long tenure as a teacher, she left a mark on the cultural landscape of her time.
