The Art of Breaking and Interaction

Saburō Murakami was a Japanese visual and performance artist and a member of the Gutai Art Association. His work is most notably defined by his paper-breaking performances, known as kami-yaburi, in which he burst through kraft paper stretched over large wooden frames. This practice, which he continued throughout his life, was inspired by his toddler son bursting through a fusuma paper space divider. His artistic approach was characterized by a highly conceptual method that often materialized in playful interactive forms, emphasizing themes of time, chance, and intuition.

His diverse body of work included:

      Evolution of Form and Style

Murakami's stylistic journey saw him move from figurative painting to abstract works in the early 1950s. During his time with the Gutai group, he experimented with various textures, such as applying nikawa, an animal glue used in Nihonga painting, to create surfaces that would gradually peel off over time. In the 1960s, his paintings adopted a style of reduced color and simplified pictorial elements. Later in his career, his exhibitions increasingly centered on events involving performance and interaction, such as Suji (Lines), where the act of drawing a line on paper was triggered by the arrival of each visitor.
