      Julien Levy: život v barvách

      mladý život a vzdělání

Julien Levy, významný art dealer a zakladatel galerie Julien Levy v New Yorku, se narodil 22. ledna 1906. Svou cestu k umění začal studiem muzeální administratury na Harvardu pod vedením Paula J. Sachse, avšak těsně před dokončením studia se rozhodl pro jiný směr a školu opustil.

      významné momenty kariéry

Levyovo spojení s Marcelem Duchampem mu otevřelo dveře k legendám jako Man Ray a Berenice Abbott, což mu následně umožnilo získat část osobního archivu Eugène Atget. V roce 1927 se setkal s umělkyní a spisovatelkou Minou Loy, se kterou se propojil skrze její dceru Joellu Haweis, s níž později vstoupil do svazku. Po rozvodu v roce 1942 našel Levy nové umělecké i osobní inspirace, když si v roce 1944 oženil surrealistku Muriel Streeter.

galerie Julien Levy: srdce surrealismu a avantgardy

Galerie, založená v roce 1931 na Madison Avenue č. 602, se stala klíčovým centrem pro propagaci evropských i amerických surrealistů. Mezi nejvýznamnější výstavy patřily:

      odkaz a pozdní život

V roce 1949 se Levy přestěhoval do Connecticutu, v roce 1958 uzavřel manželství s Jean Farley McLaughlinovou a působil jako pedagog na Sarah Lawrence College a State University of New York v Purchase. Jako autor si nechal zapsat vzpomínky na galerii umění a texty o surrealismu. Julien Levy zemřel 10. února 1981.
