Born in Dresden, Germany, Gustav Otto Müller was a versatile painter whose expertise spanned military, landscape, and genre subjects. His formal artistic training took place between 1842 and 1846 at the Königliche Akademie Dresden, where he studied under Ernst Friedrich August Rietschel, Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld, and Julius Hübner. Beyond his own creative output, Müller was a dedicated copyist of masterpieces from the Dresden collection and a scholar of art history. In 1895, he authored the book „Vergessene und halbvergessene Dresdner Künstler des vorigen Jahrhunderts“. His professional life was deeply intertwined with the cultural institutions of his home city; he served as a drawing teacher at the royal cadet school in Dresden starting in 1865, and later held roles as an inspector and curator at the Königliche Gemäldegalerie in Dresden.
Müller's career was marked by a deep connection to the German landscape and historical settings. During the 1850s, he traveled to Italy, a journey that informed his perspective as a painter. His body of work includes depictions of significant architectural and natural sites, such as:
