The Life and Art of Abd al-Aziz

Born in Kashan, Iran, Abd al-Aziz was a Persian miniaturist who worked during the sixteenth century. He was the son of the artist Abd al-Wahhab, and together they were noted for their skill in painting. Historical accounts suggest that Abd al-Aziz may have been a teacher to Shah Tahmasp I, providing the young ruler with lessons in the art of painting. His career was marked by significant contributions to the royal kitabkhane, most notably through his involvement in the production of the Shahnameh of Shah Tahmasp between approximately 1525 and 1535. During this period, he served as a leader for the project, often collaborating with other masters to complete intricate miniatures.

      Artistic Legacy and Transitions

The artist's body of work includes various notable pieces, such as The Townsman Robs the Villager’s Orchard and a portrait titled Prince in Black. His style has been associated with the work of Sultan Muhammad, and his hand is identifiable in several famous miniatures. Following a period of service in the royal workshops of Tabriz, Abd al-Aziz is believed to have worked in the workshops of Sultan Ibrahim Mirza. His later career is linked to the production of manuscripts such as the Haft Awrang and the Fal-nameh. His artistic output is characterized by a range of emotional intensity, with scholars describing his works as being often hot, sometimes very cold, and rarely lukewarm.
