The Multidisciplinary Vision of Charles Gagnon

Born in Montreal, Canada, Charles Gagnon was a multidisciplinary artist whose creative practice spanned painting, photography, and film. His formal training began in graphic art and interior design at the Parsons School of Design in New York, followed by studies at the New York School of Interior Design and evening classes at New York University. During his time in New York, he was influenced by the city's experimental avant-garde, the Egyptian wing of the Metropolitan Museum, and the worn-out surfaces of urban buildings. His work often explored the intersection of the abstract and the representational, sometimes incorporating letters and numbers into his compositions.

Gagnon's evolution as a painter included several distinct periods, such as his Gap Paintings (1962–1963), which utilized chromatic fields to create spatial ambiguity through the interplay of straight lines and gestural strokes. His later career saw the development of the white paintings (1967–1969), the Markers / Marqueurs (1973–1974), the Splitscreenspace series (1976 to 1983), and word paintings (1986 to 1990). Beyond the canvas, he worked with silkscreen prints, audio collage, and experimental film, eventually combining photography and painting in the 1990s.

      Legacy and Recognition

Throughout his career, Gagnon's work was featured in numerous exhibitions, including a retrospective at the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal in 2001. His photography was showcased at the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography and the National Gallery of Canada. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he received the Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2002.

In addition to his studio practice, Gagnon was an educator, teaching at Loyola College and later at the University of Ottawa, where he taught photography and media arts until his retirement in 1996. His legacy continues through the Charles Gagnon Master of Fine Arts Admission Scholarship, established at the University of Ottawa in 2004.
