      A Life of Many Talents

Clara Sabina Victoria Maria Dobbelaere lived a life that moved between the quiet comforts of Belgian high society and the active pursuit of various crafts. Born in Ghent on January 15, 1853, she grew up within a liberal bourgeois family. Her father, Pierre Bernard Dobbelaere, was an artist himself, which likely helped shape her early interests. At eighteen, she married Jules Voortman, a textile manufacturer from Ghent, and together they raised two sons, Jean and Robert.

Her days were often spent in different settings, from the family home in Ghent to the Villa Den Rooy near Meerle. These locations provided much of her early inspiration. She captured the local landscape and the daily lives of rural workers through photography, documenting the realities of agricultural life in the region. Her interests were never confined to a single medium; she moved naturally between painting, drawing, and more tactile forms of creation.

The Practice of Art and Craft

As her career progressed, Clara sought formal instruction to refine her natural abilities. Around the age of twenty-five, she studied under Jean Delvin, a teacher at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. This period of training helped her develop a skill set that spanned several disciplines. Her paintings often focused on landscapes and genre scenes, while her drawings utilized pastel, pencil, and charcoal to capture light and shadow.

Later in life, her focus shifted toward the applied arts, where she demonstrated a remarkable versatility. She became skilled in several specialized techniques:

      • Leatherwork, specifically the technique of leather embossing known as repoussé.
      • Bookbinding, creating decorated covers and portfolios.
      • Bronze work and the creation of small objects.
      • Photography, used to record both family life and the surrounding countryside.

      Recognition and Later Years

While many women of her era faced difficulties in gaining professional recognition, Clara participated in several significant exhibitions. Her work appeared in the Paris Salon during the early 1890s and was shown at the Ghent World Fair in 1913. She also exhibited at La Libre Esthétique in Brussels, where her leatherwork was noted by attendees. These appearances allowed her to share her diverse skills with a broader audience beyond her immediate social circle.

After the death of her husband in 1923, Clara moved to Menton, near Nice. This change in scenery marked the final chapter of her life. She passed away on April 15, 1926, at the age of seventy-three. Though she lived much of her life in relative privacy, her contributions to both fine art and decorative craft remain preserved in collections such as the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent.
