The Life and Art of Elin Nordlund

Elin Nordlund was a Finnish painter who lived a life rooted in the landscapes of her home. Born on February 4, 1855, in Pori, she grew up in a household shaped by literature and local standing. Her father, Carl Ferdinand Nordlund, was a writer and the rector of the Pori Lyceum, while her mother, Johanna Elisabet von Schantz, provided the other half of her early world. These connections to the intellectual and social fabric of Pori remained a constant throughout her years.

Her brushwork and focus were shaped by the quiet observations of the world around her. She spent her life capturing the light and the stillness of the Finnish environment, moving through the seasons as they changed the colors of the earth and sea. This steady attention to the physical world defined her practice, as she sought to translate the textures of nature onto canvas. She remained tied to her origins, eventually passing away in Pori on August 27, 1932.

      Early Life and Artistic Training

Born in Pori, Finland, Elin Nordlund grew up in a household shaped by literature and letters. Her father, Carl Ferdinand Nordlund, was a writer, while her mother, Johanna Elisabet von Schantz, provided the domestic foundation of her early years. These early surroundings in Pori offered a quiet beginning before her focus shifted toward the technical demands of visual representation.

Her formal training began with a focus on the fundamentals of drawing. She studied under Hjalmar Munsterhjelmin and Maria Wiikin, learning to observe the subtle shifts in light and form. These early lessons provided the groundwork for her later movements into more structured environments. She eventually moved into the private academy of Adolf von Becker, where her technical skills were further refined through rigorous practice.

      Studies in Stockholm and Copenhagen

In 1871, she moved to Stockholm, where she spent a year under the guidance of August Malmström. This period in Sweden provided a foundation before her path took her further into Europe. By 1885, she had reached Paris, spending two years studying with R. Collin and Gustave-Claude-Etienne Courtois. These years in France allowed her to refine her approach to the canvas away from her Finnish roots.

The focus of her training shifted again when she arrived in Copenhagen between 1887 and 1888. Under Julius Paulson, she worked on her painting techniques, but her interests extended beyond the brush. During this time in Denmark, she also took up the practice of wood cutting. This tactile, physical method of working with wood added a different dimension to her technical repertoire.

      The Önningeby Artists' Colony

The island of Åland provided a specific landscape for her work. She joined Victor Westerholm at the Önningeby artists' colony, finding a place among the others who gathered there. Her presence in the colony is marked by her stays in 1889 and 1890, though she likely arrived as early as 1887. The light and the coastal surroundings of the islands became a recurring part of her life. She returned to the Åland Islands later, visiting in 1904, 1906, and 1911.

Her time at the colony was spent observing the immediate environment. The works from this period reflect the specific textures of the islands. She captured the way the light sat upon the landscape, focusing on the quiet details of the coastal scenery. Her connection to this place was not a single event but a series of visits that spanned decades.

      Notable Works and Catalogued Pieces

The brushwork in her paintings often settles on quiet, domestic, or coastal scenes. One such piece, Sleeping Child, dates to about 1891. It captures a moment of stillness, focusing on the soft contours of a resting figure. This work reflects a steady interest in the quietude of private life and the subtle shifts of light on skin and fabric.

Her connection to the Åland Islands is visible in her landscape studies. Landscape in Önningeby remains a part of her repertoire, showing the terrain and the specific light of that coastal region. Later, in 1906, she produced Coastal Landscape in Kimito Marine Landscape, a work that looks toward the sea and the meeting of land and water. These pieces show a consistent habit of observing the natural world, from the intimate details of a room to the wider, open stretches of the Finnish coast.
