      A Life Interrupted by Shadows

Munich, 1903. The foundations of Erna Amend’s artistic identity begin in the classrooms of the Volksschule and Oberschule, eventually leading her to the halls of the Kunstgewerbeschule. By 1932, she is a student at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, refining her vision under the guidance of Professor Julius Hess. Her early years are defined by a search for light and form, fueled by extended stays in Corsica, Spain, and Mallorca. It is in these Mediterranean landscapes that the experience of gris clair—the subtle, pale grey light—begins to settle into her palette, fundamentally altering how she perceives color and atmosphere.

The trajectory of her career shifts violently in 1937. Because her mother is Jewish, the state imposes a professional ban on her work as an artist. The brushes are set aside for the mundane tasks of survival. She works as a secretary in the Simplizissimus artist pub and is eventually conscripted to the grueling labor of street cleaning. The creative impulse is forced into the shadows of administrative work and manual toil.

      The Struggle for Autonomy

The post-war era brings a different kind of instability. While she returns to freelance painting in 1945, the economic volatility of the currency reform in 1948 forces her back into a clerical role, this time as a secretary in the architecture office of von der Lippe. Her resilience is marked by a persistent return to her primary vocation, a slow reclamation of the space she once held in the art world.

By the mid-1950s, the momentum of her painting returns. She exhibits with Günther Franke and finds her way into the circles of the Goergenkreis. Her presence in the Munich art scene is solidified through exhibitions at Gurlitt and her involvement in the Forum. Her work, such as the 1970 piece Diagonal Composition, reflects a sophisticated understanding of structure and space, held within the collections of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, Munich.
