A Life in Color and Landscape

Ernst Schumacher was a German painter and graphic artist. His artistic journey began at the Düsseldorf Academy, where he attended the elementary class for painting. During his early years, he undertook several study trips to Holland, France, and Southern Italy. In 1922, he became a member of the artist group Das Junge Rheinland, which facilitated several exhibitions at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and with Mutter Ey. Following the dissolution of that group in 1928, he joined the Rheinische Sezession. His first solo exhibition outside of Germany took place in 1933 at the Galerie Jeanne Castel in Paris.

Schumacher's work underwent a stylistic evolution, moving from an initial impressionistic approach characterized by small-format, nature-oriented oil paintings toward medium-format landscapes defined by expressive form and solidity. His preferred subjects throughout his career were rural or urban environments, often focusing on houses as he observed them during his travels.

      Academic Career and Later Works

After returning to Germany and settling in Berlin, Schumacher experienced a period of withdrawal in Schwarzenbach an der Saale from the late 1930s until 1947. In 1947, he was appointed as a professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Berlin by Karl Hofer. His professional involvement included serving as a regular board member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund and participating in numerous annual exhibitions.

His later repertoire included various subjects such as:
