The Artistic Evolution of Gérard Gasiorowski

Born in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, France, Gérard Gasiorowski was a multifaceted visual artist whose practice spanned photography, painting, installation, and the creation of fictive works. After studying at the School of Applied Arts between 1947 and 1951, his work matured significantly between 1964 and 1972. During this period, he produced photorealistic reproductions of enlarged black-and-white photographs, often utilizing images collected through the publishing house Delpire, where he served as a librarian. These works shared an affinity with family albums and publicity photos.

Following 1972, Gasiorowski turned away from painting to explore photomontage and more critical investigations. He staged miniature battlefield sets using toy planes, trains, and tanks to create works such as The Horrors of War. He also developed the Worosiskiga Academy, a fictitious art school run by a tyrant, which produced various objects, drawings, and gouaches. This project included a set of hats signed by 500 famous artists as a critique of the art market.

      Later Works and Legacy

In his later years, Gasiorowski's output included organic sculptures and paintings that often functioned as monumental polyptychs. His final work was a 12-panel polyptych titled Fertility. His diverse body of work is represented in several collections, including the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, which holds works such as:

Gasiorowski passed away in Bron, France, in 1986.
