The Life and Artistic Journey of Hans-Peter Zimmer
Hans-Peter Zimmer was a German painter and sculptor born in Berlin. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, he became a central figure in the art scene through his involvement with Gruppe SPUR, which he formed in 1957 alongside Heimrad Prem, Helmut Sturm, and the sculptor Lothar Fischer. Following a joint exhibition at the Pavillon im Alten Botanischen Garten in Munich, the group met the Danish artist and philosopher Asger Jorn, who connected them with the Galerie Van de Loo.
The trajectory of the group was marked by significant controversy; in 1959, they joined the Situationist International, but by 1961, they were banned from the Haus der Kunst by the Bavarian Minister of Culture. After being indicted for pornography and blasphemy and subsequently expelled from the Situationist International in 1962, Gruppe SPUR eventually disbanded in 1966.
Later Career and Academic Contributions
Following the dissolution of Gruppe SPUR, Zimmer and Helmut Sturm founded Gruppe Geflecht in 1966. However, Zimmer soon moved toward a solo career, having completed his studies in Hamburg and München. His commitment to the arts extended into academia, as he began working as a professor for painting at the HBK Braunschweig in 1982. He passed away in Soltau.
