The Life and Form of Joannis Avramidis

Born in Batumi, on the Black Sea, in the Adjarian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, Joannis Avramidis was a contemporary Greek-Austrian painter and sculptor. His early life was marked by significant movement, including a period of living in Greece after his family emigrated from the USSR. During the Axis occupation of Greece, he was deported to Vienna, Austria, to work in a train repair shop. Following the end of the Second World War, he returned to Vienna to study at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, first in the masterclass of Robin Christian Andersen and later in the sculpture classes of Fritz Wotruba. He eventually became a professor at the Academy, serving as the Head of the Masterclass for Sculpture from 1968 until his retirement in 1992.

      Artistic Evolution and Themes

Avramidis' artistic journey began with painting, where he explored landscapes and intimistic subjects. His work as a sculptor emerged significantly after his studies with Wotruba, leading to a search for the absolute figure. His sculptural practice is characterized by several distinct developments:

      • Figurengruppen: Modular sculptures that reduce the anthropomorphic to an elemental form, often appearing as clusters of figures in a fused block.
      • Säulenfiguren: Columnar works, such as the Humanitas-Saüle, which utilize a mirrored effect of stacked figures.
      • Bandfiguren: Sculptures that seek mobility and openness, appearing in rectangular or edge profiles.
      • Köpfe: Highly stylized, often faceless or anonymous representations of the human head, ranging from smooth, rounded shapes to angular, wedge-shaped forms.
      • Mensch-Bäume: Bronze works that explore the morphing of the human form into trees.

While he gained recognition for his sculptures, Avramidis was also a painter. His paintings, many of which were revealed from his estate after his death, include portraits, landscapes, and a series of circular color studies known as Sonnen.
