      Mød maleren: John Laporte

      Early Life, Family and Training

John Laporte was born in March 1761 into a family of French Huguenot origins. His early years were shaped by the guidance of the Irish-born Huguenot painter John Melchior Barralet, under whom he studied the fundamentals of his craft. This training provided the foundation for a life spent working in and around London, moving through the circles of landscape painting and etching.

Artistry ran through his household. His son, George Henry Laporte, followed a similar path as an artist. His daughter, Miss M. A. Laporte, also made her mark in the professional sphere, exhibiting portraits and fancy subjects at the academy and the British Institution between 1813 and 1822.

      Professional Career and Teaching

Laporte spent much of his working life in and around London, focusing his attention on landscape painting and etching. His hand was most often found in watercolour, capturing the quiet details of the natural world. From 1785, he began showing his landscapes at the Royal Academy and the British Institution, placing his work among the established exhibitions of the London art scene. He was also an original member of the short-lived society known as The Associated Artists in Watercolours, a group he eventually left in 1811.

Teaching was a steady part of his professional life. He served as a drawing-master at the Addiscombe Military Seminary in Surrey, guiding students through the fundamentals of form and line. Beyond the classroom, he maintained a successful practice as a private teacher, helping others develop their own technical skills. His influence extended through his instruction, as he worked with various pupils in his studio.

      Major Publications and Collaborations

His hand moved through several instructional and observational projects that sought to capture the nuances of the natural world. Between 1798 and 1801, he produced Characters of Trees, a work focused on the specificities of arboreal forms. This was followed in 1804 by Progressive Lessons sketched from Nature, a series intended to guide the hand through direct observation. He also shared his methods in The Progress of a Water-colour Drawing, a publication that looked closely at the technical development of the medium.

A significant period of collaboration took place between 1801 and 1805. During these years, he worked alongside William F. Wells to produce seventy-two soft-ground etchings. These plates were based on the drawings of Thomas Gainsborough. Laporte was responsible for thirty-three of these etchings, contributing his own interpretations to the collection. The plates were initially released one by one as they were completed, and they were later gathered into a bound set titled A Collection of Prints, illustrative of English Scenery, from the Drawings and Sketches of Gainsborough.

      Notable Engravings and Works

The precision of his hand shows in the works that moved from his sketches to the engraver's plate. His composition Perdita discovered by the Old Shepherd found its way into print through the engraver Bartolozzi. Similarly, the scene of Millbank on the River Thames was translated into an engraving by Francis Jukes. These pieces reflect a steady interest in the textures of the English landscape and the quiet details of its riverbanks and fields.

In 1807, he produced a pen-and-tusche lithograph titled Landscape with Deer under Trees, Specimens of Polyautography, (series). This work highlights a technical curiosity with the medium. Other subjects from his career include Rob Roy’s Cave and Llanberis Lake, Caernarvonshire, N. Wales, which dates to about 1836. These works capture the specific light and topography of the Welsh landscape, focusing on the stillness of the water and the ruggedness of the terrain.
